The ACES Alumni Association welcomes alumni to bring their youth ages 8-13 to campus for a unique intergenerational learning experience at ACES Family Academies. This three-day interaction is a fun-filled experience that actively engages kids in ACES academics while creating memories for families.
Enroll in courses and “graduate” with a diploma. Along with the activities in the classroom, there is plenty of time to socialize. Read our news release about what this year's Family Academies has in store!

Find out what’s poppin’ in Crop Sciences! Learn how breeders in ACES made the all-new popcorn hybrid Illini SuperPop*TM and the science behind why it pops. This session will also explore how the latest technologies help improve the crops we eat. Participate in hands-on and tasty demonstrations as you learn, study, and eat Illinois’s official snack food.
Grilling and BBQing
In this family-friendly BBQ and grilling class, parents and children will work together to master the art of grilling while learning important safety and sanitation practices. Participants will also explore the nutritional value of various meats and discover tips for creating delicious, healthy meals on the grill. Perfect for making lasting memories and gaining new cooking skills!
Crafting Art and Toys from Honeysuckle
Learn to identify and craft with invasive bush honeysuckle. We can find this plant in abundance as it spreads in natural areas. This is our chance to turn it into something fun! Each participant will leave with a hand-crafted item they help to create.
Trading Candy Makes Everyone Happy
We will use candy to discuss common economic principles such as supply and demand, utility, and global trade through a fun interactive activity involving candy!
Paint Your ACES Off
Join us for "Paint Your ACES Off," an interactive and creative session where you’ll dive into the art of branding — literally! Get ready to roll up your sleeves, grab a brush, and bring the College of ACES to life on canvas. Discover the elements of a brand that help audiences connect to our college and its mission as you work together to create a unique masterpiece. Rumen Raiders: Exploring the Secret Stomach of Cows
Ever wondered what happens inside a cow's stomach? In this hands-on class, you'll get the chance to feel inside a cow's rumen, see the tiny microbes that help cows digest their food, and discover how these amazing animals turn plants into protein. It's a one-of-a-kind opportuntiy to get up close and personal with the science of cow digestion!
Plant Science Lab: Growing Gardens, Saving Seeds, and Protecting Pollinators
Discover the secrets of a rare and endangered plant species with hands-on science activities. You will get to make a recycled pot, plant seeds, and learn how to care for native plants in your own neighborhood and beyond.
Future of Farming: Ag Robots
The usage of robots in agriculture is growing. We will talk about the current and future use of robots on farms. Attendees will build and program a small robot during the session.
Smart Agriculture: Sensors and Automation
To help us be efficient in feeding the world, sensors and automation will play an important part in the future of agriculture. In this session we will explore some different ways we measure environmental conditions and set up automatic systems with sensors. Participants will get to build and program a small "smart farm".

Have you ever heard that bacteria and yeast are the future of food and wondered how that could possibly be true? Learn about precision fermentation, liquid-solid separations, and the science behind how alternative protein is made from IBRL’s team of expert engineers and food scientists.
Get the Dirt on Dirt
Get your hands dirty (quite literally) as you learn more about how soil differs throughout the state of Illinois. You’ll also get to learn about the Illinois soil archive and how we learn from samples that are more than a century old.

Who can participate in ACES Family Academies?
Any ACES Alumni can bring their children, grandchildren, or special youth
What is the age range for Family Academies?
The program is limited to youth ages 8-13. We base age on the participant's age at the time of the program.
What is the cost to participate?
$200 for each adult and youth registrant. Your registration includes 2-night accommodations, 5 meals (2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 2 dinners), and all program materials.
What physical requirements are there to participate?
ACES Family Academies encompasses a full campus experience, and that includes walking to and from each course, rain or shine. It is a 20-minute walk from Bousfield Hall and the Dining Hall to the ACES Campus where many courses take place. Participants can expect to walk upwards of 15,000 steps each day. We encourage participants who require physical accommodations to contact the ACES Alumni Association.
Where do we stay?
Participants spend two nights in Bousfield Hall. Each family unit stays together in a suite with their own bathroom.

After registration closes in June, you will receive an information packet with more details, including a recommended packing list.
